Robert created glass terrarium sculptures to house living art compositions of about 50 hermit crabs. Taking care to pose no harm to the crabs, he imitated the interior shape of each of his
hand blown crystal shells, following spiral formations which accommodate the contours of a
crab's body. On the exterior he has taken license creating individual pieces of art, fusing the
crystal with 24 karat gold, sterling silver or bronze. Though the crab will inhabit its glass home
only until it outgrows it and is ready to find its next one, the randomness of where the
crystal shell is abandoned adds to the visual dynamic of this installation.
